Banking News

SBI Hikes Fixed Deposit Interest Rates

i. Country’s largest bank State Bank of India has increased fixed deposit or FD rates for some select maturity periods. According to the revised rates, SBI is offering 6.8% interest rate on FDs with maturity period of one to two years, as compared to 6.7% earlier. The interest rate for senior citizens also goes up to 7.30% on SBI FDs with tenure between one year and two years, from 7.2% earlier.

ii. Similarly, SBI has hiked interest rate on FDs with maturity period between two years and three years. SBI is now offering 6.80% as compared to 6.75% earlier. The interest rate for senior citizens also goes up to 7.30% on SBI FDs with tenure between two years and three years, from 7.25% earlier. SBI has kept interest rate unchanged for FDs with other maturity tenures.


Arvind Saxena Appointed As UPSC Chairman

i. Arvind Saxena has been appointed as the new Chairman of Union Public Service Commission. UPSC is the institution responsible for conducting examination for selection bureaucrats, diplomats and police officers. Saxena will be serving in the office till August 7, 2020, when he attains the age of 65 years.

ii. Prior to this, he has been working as the acting head since June 20, 2018. He joined UPSC back in May 2015. Earlier, he has also worked as Director of the Aviation Research Centre (ARC).

LG Appoints Brian Kwon As Mobile Business President

i. LG Electronics has announced that it has appointed Brian Kwon as the new president. He is replacing Hwang Jeong-hwan after one year.

ii. Brian Kwon is head of LG’s home entertainment business, from December 1. It comes after LG’s mobile business posted a loss of $410 million this year, including a $130.5 million net loss in the last quarter.


Azim Premji Conferred Highest French Civilian Honour

i. IT czar and philanthropist Azim Premji was bestowed with the highest French civilian distinction Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour). Premji, who is the chairman of Bengaluru-headquartered IT major Wipro, received the distinction from the Ambassador of France to India Alexandre Ziegler in Bengaluru.

ii. The award was bestowed on Azim Premji for his outstanding contribution to developing the information technology industry in India, his economic outreach in France, and his laudable contribution to society as a philanthropist through the Azim Premji Foundation and Azim Premji University.

IFFI 2018: Donbass Wins The Golden Peacock

i. Donbass directed by Sergei Loznitsa has won the coveted Golden Peacock Award at the 49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which concluded in Goa on November 28, 2018. 

ii. The Golden Peacock Award carries a cash prize of Rs 4 million (Rs 40 lakhs) to be shared equally between the Producer and the Director, Trophy and the citation.

Government Launches Bhasha Sangam

i. The government has launched a unique initiative called Bhasha Sangam to introduce school students to 22 Indian languages. The initiative, under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, was active for the period between 22nd November – 21st December.

ii. Bhasha Sangam is a programme for schools and educational institutions to provide multilingual exposure to students in Indian languages. Another objective of Bhasha Sangam is to enhance linguistic tolerance and respect and promote national integration.

Himachal Pradesh First State To Launch Single Emergency Number ‘112’

i. Himachal Pradesh has became first Indian state to launch a single emergency number “112“. This will connect to police, fire, health and other helplines through an Emergency Response Centre in the state.

ii. Under this project, an Emergency Response Centre (ERC) has been established in Shimla along with 12 district command centres (DCCs), covering the entire state. Union Home Ministry statement stated that Ensuring safety of women, ‘SHOUT‘ feature has been introduced in ‘112 India’ mobile app to seek immediate assistance from registered volunteers.

India, China Ink Protocol On Hygiene & Inspection Requirements For Exports

i. India and China have signed a protocol on hygiene and inspection requirements for the exports. The commerce ministry stated in a statement that a protocol on hygiene and inspection requirements for the exports was signed in New Delhi during the visit of Chinese Vice Minister, General Administration of Customs of China Hu Wei who was leading a six-member delegation to India.

ii. The move would enable India to commence export of fish meal and fish oil to China. The neighbouring country has so far not allowed these exports by India.

India-United Kingdom Exercise KONKAN-18 Held At Goa

i. Naval exercise between India and the United KingdomKONKANheld in Goa this year. Both Navies have, over the years, undertaken bilateral activities such as training exchanges and technical cooperation. The Bilateral KONKAN exercise provides a platform for the two Navies to periodically exercise at sea and in harbour, so as to build interoperability and share best practices.

ii. The KONKAN series of exercises commenced in 2004, and since then has grown in scale. The Royal Navy will be represented by HMS Dragon, a Type 45 Class Destroyer equipped with an integral Wildcat helicopter.

UGC To Set Up A Consortium For Approved Journals

i. University Grants Commission, UGC has decided to set up a Consortium of Academic and Research Ethics (CARE) which will prepare a fresh list of credible quality journals in the non-science disciplines. 

ii. The commission stated that the percentage of research articles published in poor quality journals is reported to be high in India which has adversely affected its image. CARE will be headed by the UGC Vice Chairman.

ISRO Launches India’s HysIS Satellite With 30 Foreign Satellites

i. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched PSLV-C43. This launch took place from the first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

ii. Marking the 45th mission that uses the polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) rocket, ISRO launched. its latest Earth-mapping satellite, HysIS,as part of the mission. The HysIS satellite adds a mass of 360kg to the payload, and launched beside 30 other satellites from six nations.


Campaign Launched To Spread Pan-India Awareness About Hepatitis Disease

i. Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences has launched a campaign to spread a pan-India awareness about hepatitis disease. Empowering People Against Hepatitis: The Empathy Campaign was launched at Metro Bhawan, New Delhi in presence of Managing Director of DMRC. Dr. Mangu Singh, and Director ILBS. Shiv Kumar Sarin.

ii. The initiative will help generate awareness about Hepatitis B and C. About 60 million people in the country are inflicted with Hepatitis virus infections which are responsible for liver cirrhosis and cancer.



Dehradun Airport To Be Renamed After Atal Bihari Vajpayee

i. The Uttarakhand government has decided to rename the Dehradun airport after former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. 

ii. The proposal to rename the Jolly Grant airport after Atal Bihari Vajpayee was approved by the state cabinet at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.

CSIR To Establish A High-End Skill Development Centre In Chandigarh

i. India’s premier National Research Laboratory CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (CSIR-IMTECH) announced a new partnership with Merck, a leading German science and technology company, to establish a ‘High End Skill Development Centre’ in CSIR-IMTECH, Chandigarh.

Ukraine Declares Martial Law After Russian Naval Attack

i. Ukraine’s parliament has imposed martial law in the country to fight what its president called “growing aggression” from Moscow after a weekend naval confrontation off the disputed Crimean Peninsula in which Russia fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels amid renewed tensions between the neighbors.

ii. Russia and Ukraine blamed each other in the dispute that further ratcheted up tensions ever since Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko asked lawmakers in Kiev to institute martial law.

SEBI Fines Brokerage Firm Anand Rathi For Violating Stock Broker Norms

i. Markets regulator SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) has fined brokerage house Anand Rathi Rs 1 lakh for violating stock broker norms by transferring funds from the client’s account to own account and vice versa on several occasions.

ii. In an order, the regulator stated that Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers has mixed-up client’s funds with its own funds and vice versa and thereby acted in contravention of SEBI(Stock Brokers and Sub-Brokers) Regulations.

RBI Launches Survey To Create A Profile Of India’s Startup Sector

i. The Reserve Bank has launched a survey to gauge their scope with respect to turnover, profitability, and workforce with an aim to create a profile of India’s startup sector.  The survey would also throw light on the problems faced by the startup sector.

i. Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, has passed away at the age of 57. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease (MND), in March 2017.

Government To Sell 100% Stake In Air India’s Ground Handling Subsidiary

i. The government has approved 100 percent stake sale in state-owned airline Air India’s ground-handling company Air India Air Transport Services Limited (AIATSL). The approval comes at a time when the government is working on ways to revive the fortunes of Air India — estimated to have the debt burden of more than Rs 500 billion, including the sale of non-core assets.

ii. AIATSL is Air India’s only profitable subsidiary. In 2016-17, it clocked a profit of over Rs 334 million, earning Rs 6.2 billion in revenues from its handling operations.

Centre, ADB Sign 200 Million Dollar Loan Pact To Upgrade State Highways In Bihar

i. The Centre and Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a 200 million dollar loan agreement to finance widening and upgrading of about 230 Kilometers State Highways in Bihar to all-weather standards with road safety features.

ii. The agreement was signed by Additional Secretary in the Finance Ministry Sameer Kumar Khare and Officer-in-Charge of ADB’s India Resident Mission, Rajeev P Singh in New Delhi.

 WhatsApp Business Head Neeraj Arora Resigns

i. WhatsApp’s Chief Business Officer Neeraj Arora has resigned from the post after 7-years in the company. His exit comes seven months after WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum left the company. Arora had been an integral part of WhatsApp since 2011 and played a vital role in the company’s acquisition by Facebook in 2014.

ii. Neeraj Arora was the front-runner for the post of the CEO at WhatsApp after the departure of Koum. Koum had quit over data privacy concerns in April 2018. The company recently appointed Abhijit Bose as India head.

Sunil Arora Appointed New Chief Election Commissioner of India

i. Sunil Arora has been appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner of India. He succeeds Om Prakash Rawat. He will take over the top job on December 2. A former bureaucrat, Arora was appointed as Election Commissioner in August 2017.

ii. A 1980-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Arora has worked in ministries such as finance, textiles and the Planning Commission. Ashok Lavasa is the second election commissioner.

RBI Eases Hedging Norms For ECBs To 70% From Current 100%

i. The Reserve Bank has relaxed norms for External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs) by reducing the mandatory hedging provision to 70% from the current 100%. The relaxed norms will apply to the ECBs with a maturity period between 3 and 5 years.

ii. On a further review of the extant provisions, it has been decided, in consultation with the government of India, to reduce the mandatory hedge coverage from 100% to 70% for ECBs raised under Track-I of the ECB framework.

i. Ms. Preeti Sudan, Union Health Secretary did soft-launch of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) segment of the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) in seven states.

ii. The path-breaking initiative will provide near-real-time data to policymakers for detecting outbreaks, reducing the morbidity and mortality and lessening disease burden in the populations and better health systems.

NASA Insight Lands On Mars 7 Months After Launch

i. NASA’s InSight spacecraft landed on Mars after nearly a 7 months, 458-million-kilometre journey, and a 6.5-minute parachuted descent through the Red Planet’s atmosphere.

ii. The 360-kg lander also shared its first photo from Mars, showing an area called Elysium Planitia, where it will dig five meters below the surface. The $993-million mission will measure the Mars’ internal heat and study quakes.

UN selects Noida to participate in Global Sustainable Cities 2025 plan

The United Nations selected Uttar Pradesh’s Noida and Greater Noida to participate in its Global Sustainable Cities 2025 initiative. The twin-cities in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, adjoining the national capital, have been selected in the “University City” category ahead of Mumbai and Bengaluru as the only invitee from India.

  • Overall 25 cities across the world have been selected in five categories by the UN Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) cities initiative, Senior UN Advisor and CEO UN Global Sustainability Index Institute Roland Schatz said.

UP govt to install 221-metre bronze statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya


Uttar Pradesh government will install a 221-metre bronze statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh principal secretary (information) Avanish Awasthi said. The height of the actual statue would be 151 metres, its overhead umbrella would be 20 metres while the pedestal would be 50 metres. A museum would be housed at the pedestal.

Nitish Kumar unveils Lord Buddha’s 70-feet statue in Bihar’s Rajgir

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled a 70-feet tall statue of Lord Buddha at Rajgir in Nalanda district. It is the second tallest statue of Buddha in the country.

Govt To Infuse INR 42,000 Crore In PSU Banks By March

The government will infuse Rs 42,000 crore in the state-owned banks by March-end and the next tranche would be released by mid-December. Close to Rs 42,000 crore remain to be infused as capital in public sector banks in the current financial year.

  • State-owned banks will need less capital to meet their capital adequacy norms, as the Reserve Bank of India recently decided to defer the deadline for them to meet the global norms or Basel-III requirement by a year till March 2020.


India’s GDP growth in Q2 likely to slow to 7.5-7.6%: SBI

Ahead of the official release of the second-quarter GDP figures, State Bank of India (SBI) estimated the country’s economy to expand by 7.5-7.6 per cent, slower than the prior quarter, mainly on account of a slowdown in rural demand.

  • India’s largest lender also said in its Ecowrap report that the SBI Composite Leading Indicator (CLI), a basket of 21 leading indicators for the quarter in consideration, is showing a marginal declining trend.

India, ADB ink $200 mn loan pact to improve Bihar’s state highways

The Indian government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $200-million loan agreement for improving Bihar’s state highways.

  • ADB would provide the loan to finance the widening and upgrading of about 230 km of state highways in Bihar to all-weather standards with road safety features.

RBI Cuts Mandatory Hedging To 70% For Foreign Loans

Further easing the External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) norms, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reduced the mandatory hedging provision to 70 per cent from 100 per cent.

  • The relaxation in hedging is for Indian companies raising foreign currency-denominated ECBs under Track I, which refers to medium-term borrowings with average maturity between three and five years.
  • Further, it is also clarified that ECBs falling within the aforesaid scope but raised prior to the date of this circular will be required to mandatorily roll over their existing hedge(s) only to the extent of 70 per cent of outstanding ECB exposure.

India GDP to slow down marginally, but remain strong at 7.5% in 2019 & 2020: OECD

India ’s economic growth will slow down somewhat but remain robust, at close to 7.50% in 2019 and 2020, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has said in its 2018 Economic Outlook. India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 6.7% in 2017-18.

LSAT India Eligibility Criteria 2019

The conducting body of LSAT India 2019, Person who has announced the eligibility criteria of LSAT India 2019 on October 4, 2018. Candidates appearing in LSAT India 2019 are advised to read and understand the points mentioned in the LSAT India 2019 Eligibility Criteria for both the undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes as mentioned here.

  • Candidates appearing in LSAT India 2019 to seek admission into the BA LLB programme, ought to be an Indian citizen and should have qualified 12th board examination under 10+2 education system of CBSE or any other equivalent education board.
  • If candidates are applying for LLM law programmes, then they need to hold a LLB degree with the required qualifying marks.
  • It should be noted that the qualifying marks for the LLB degrees acquired by the candidates may vary for different participating institutes.

Moreover, there is no age bar to appear in LSAT India 2019.

LSAT India Application Form 2019

Pearson VUE has announced the application form of LSAT India 2019 on October 15, 2018. LSAT India 2019 Application Form is available for the candidates in online mode. Candidates require to first register themselves by following certain steps related to entering the name, date of birth, e-mail id and mobile number. After filling the required details, a validation link will be send to candidate’s email id enabling them to start filling the LSAT India Application Form 2019. After successfully filling the application form of LSAT India 2019, candidates will be required to remit a certain application fees via any of the convenient online payment options– Debit Card/ Credit Card/ Net Banking leading to successful submission of the LSAT India 2019 Application Form by the May 6, 2019.

LSAT India Exam centres 2019

LSAT India 2019 will be conducted in 22 cities of India with participation of 45+ law schools for the admission procedure. As the list of LSAT India 2019 Exam Centres is being announced by the conducting body, candidates have an opportunity to choose three preferences amongst the given list. At the same time, it should also be kept in mind that there will be no possibilities of changes to be made once the exam centre is being alloted. Therefore it is advised to the aspirants to choose the LSAT India 2019 Exam Centres carefully keeping in mind the proximity and convenience.

LSAT India Admit Card 2019

Person who will issue the admit card of LSAT India 2019 from May 9-18, 2019 for the test-takers to appear in the law examination. Candidates will get access of the LSAT India 2019 Admit card in online mode through their registered accounts of LSAT India. LSAT India Admit Card 2019 should be considered as an important document by the candidates firstly because it is the hall ticket to appear in the law examination and secondly, it mentions all the important details like the name of the candidates, examination date, roll number, exam duration besides timing and venue. It should also be noted that no candidate will be allowed to enter the examination hall in absence of the admit card of LSAT India 2019.

LSAT India Exam Pattern 2019

Person who has announced the exam pattern of LSAT India 2019 on October 4, 2018 along with the application form of LSAT India 2019. With the help of LSAT India 2019 Exam Pattern, candidates will get idea of the questions, topics, marking scheme, sequence and other important details of the question paper to be presented to the candidates. As the LSAT India Exam Pattern 2019 mentions, candidates will be given 100 questions to attempt in 2 hours 20 minutes of time. The law examination will include questions from Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension. The syllabus of LSAT India 2019 specifies the topics and marking scheme to be followed in the law examination, LSAT India 2019. Pearson VUE will include questions based on Analytical reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Reading comprehension in the law examination.

LSAT India Result 2019

Pearson VUE will announce the result of LSAT India 2019 on June 1, 2019. Candidates will be required to check their result by entering email id and password. Moreover, candidates will also be issued their scorecard along with the LSAT India 2019 Result. The conducting body of LSAT India 2019 will announce the result on percentile score format and then the result of the candidates will be compared to others of his/her group, classified as the five-year integrated undergraduate and two-year postgraduate. The LSAT India 2019 results and scores will also highlight the test taker’s relative strength of critical thinking ability.

LSAT India Cutoff 2019

Candidates will be issued the cutoff of LSAT India 2019 after the declaration of the result. Based on the different factors like total number of test takers, difficulty level of test and availability of seats for that particular programme, different law schools will determine their own cutoffs for the test-takers. Candidates who score as per the LSAT India 2019 Cutoff will be shortlisted for the counselling procedure.


LSAT India Counselling 2019

After the declaration of the result, the participating institutes of LSAT India 2019 will announce their own counselling schedule for the shortlisted candidates. After the conduct of LSAT India 2019 Counselling, candidates will be offered seats in the law schools participating.
