1) NITI Aayog Launches ‘Healthy States, Progressive India Report’

  • On February 9, 2018, NITI Aayog launched the ‘Healthy States, Progressive India’ Report. The report was jointly released by NITI Aayog CEO – Amitabh Kant, Ministry of Health, Secretary – Preeti Sudan and World Bank India Country Director – Junaid Ahmad.
  • The report ranks Indian States and Union territories (UTs) on their year-on-year incremental change in health outcomes, as well as, their overall performance with respect to each other.
  • n order to ensure fair comparison, rankings have been assigned by placing States and UTs in three categories namely viz. Larger States, Smaller States, and Union Territories (UTs).
  • The report has been developed through comprehensive study and has incorporated inputs from World Bank, India and Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

2)  RK Singh Launches ASH TRACK Mobile App For Better Management Of Fly Ash

  • Union Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R.K Singh, launched a Web-based monitoring System and a Fly Ash mobile application named ASH TRACK.
  • These platforms will enable better management of the ash produced by thermal power plants by providing an interface between fly ash producers (Thermal Power Plants) and potential ash users such as – road contractors, cement plants etc

3) PlastIndia 2018: International plastics exhibition held in Gandhinagar

  • On 7th February 2018, PlastIndia, 10th edition of international plastics exhibition, started in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • PlastIndia 2018 is held for 6 days from 7th February 2018 to 12th February 2018. It was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. It is organized by Plastindia Foundation.
  • It has participation from buyers and sellers from nearly 28 countries. New products and technologies are displayed by national and international sellers.

4) President inaugurates 88th Mahamastakabhisheka at Shravanabelagola

  • On 7th February 2018, President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the 88th Mahamastakabhisheka Mahotsav of Lord Gomateshwara at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district, Karnataka.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the Mahamastakabhisheka Mahotsav by unveiling an idol of Bahubali. He also lit a lamp to kick start the event.
  • The Mahamastakabhisheka Mahotsav is held once in 12 years. It has been celebrated for nearly 1,000 years.
  • Karnataka Governor Vajubha Vala, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swami, Jain saint Acharya Vardhamana Sagar, and Veerendra Heggade of Dharmastala, were also present at the inauguration ceremony.

5) Swaraj meets Saudi King, inaugurates Janadriyah festival

  • On February 7, 2018, Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and inaugurated ‘Janadriyah’, the national heritage and cultural festival of Saudi Arabia at Riyadh.
  • India was accorded the ‘Guest of Honour’ status at the Janadriyah Festival.
  • The Indian Pavilion at the Janadriyah Festival was based on the theme “Saudi ka Dost Bharat”.
  • It showcased the core values and traditions of India and presented a kaleidoscope of India’s vibrant culture through a colourful dance and music extravaganza.

6) Forbes releases first cryptocurrency rich list; Chris Larsen at the top

  • Forbes has released its first ever list of richest people in terms of cryptocurrency ownership. During 2017, cryptocurrency garnered lot of attention owing to meteoric price appreciation witnessed in popular cryptocurrencies viz. Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP.
  • With an estimated crypto net worth of $7.5-8 billion, Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen has topped this inaugural list.
  • Forbes report has outlined that currently there are nearly 1500 cryptoassets in existence. Combined valuation of all the cryptoassets stands at $550 billion.
  • Among others who featured on the list include Joseph Lubin with crypto net worth  of $1-5 billion, Changpeng Zhao ($1.1-2 billion), Cameron & Tyler Winklevoss ($900 million-1.1 billion) and Matthew Mellon ($900 million-1.1 billion).

7) CCI Slaps Rs 136 Crore Fine On Google For Unfair Business Practices

  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed a fine of around Rs. 136 crores on search engine major Google for unfair business practices in the Indian market for online search.
  • The penalty is being imposed on Google for infringing anti-trust conduct.  It was alleged that Google is indulging in abuse of dominant position in the market for online search through practices leading to search bias and search manipulation, among others.

8) PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi Becomes ICC’s 1st Independent Female Director

  • PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi has been appointed as the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) first-ever independent female director. Nooyi will join the cricket body in June 2018 for a 2-year term.
  • The introduction of an Independent Director, who must be female, was approved by the ICC in June 2017, aimed at improving the global governance of the sport.

9) NPCI appoints Biswamohan Mahapatra as non-executive chairman

  • National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has appointed Biswamohan Mahapatra as non-executive chairman for two years.
  • biswamohan Mahapatra replaces B Sambamurthy. B Sambamurthy was the interim chairman of NPCI. Recently Dilip Asbe was appointed as Managing Director of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

10) Smriti Mandhana to be new brand ambassador of Bata’s sport wear brand ‘Power’

  • On 7th February 2018, Smriti Mandhana, Indian cricketer, was appointed the new brand ambassador of ‘Power’, Bata’s sport wear brand.
  • Smriti Mandhana is 21 years old. She is an Indian women’s cricket team opener. From February 2018, she will start with the promotion works for Power’s latest range of products.
  • Her performance at the ICC (International Cricket Council) Women’s World Cup 2017 earned her fame and reputation.

11) Abhilasha Kumari sworn-in as Chief Justice of Manipur High Court

  • On 9th February 2018, Justice Abhilasha Kumari took charge as the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.
  • Justice Abhilasha Kumari’s oath ceremony was administered by Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla.
  • She was transferred from the Gujarat High Court. She hails from Himachal Pradesh. Her father is former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh.
  • She started her practice in the Himachal Pradesh High Court. She was appointed the additional advocate general for Himachal Pradesh. In December 2005, she was made the Gujarat High Court judge.

12) Justice Antony Dominic sworn in as Chief Justice of Kerala

  • On 9th February 2018, Antony Dominic, Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, took charge as the Chief Justice of Kerala.
  • Justice Antony Dominic’s oath as Chief Justice of Kerala was administered by Kerala Governor P. Sadasivam.
  • Justice Dominic hails from Kottayam district of Kerala. He obtained his law degree from SDM Law College, Mangalore. In 1981, He started his law practice in the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Kanjirapally.

1) HAL Develops First Hawk-I Flight

  • The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has developed the first flight of Hawk-i with indigenous Real Time Operating System (RTOS). Hawk-i is the first indigenous RTOS developed in India from scratch and certified by Center for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC). 
  • The RTOS is the system software which provides a standard run-time environment for real-time applications execution in a safe and reliable manner.

2) Defence Minister appoints panel under Vinay Sheel Oberoi to expedite capital acquisition

  • Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has formed Raksha Mantri’s Advisory Committee on Ministry of Defence (MoD) Capital Projects (RMCOMP) to monitor and expedite capital acquisition projects for modernisation of armed forces.
  • The Raksha Mantri’s Advisory Committee on Ministry of Defence (MoD) Capital Projects (RMCOMP) is a 13-member advisory committee.
  • It will carry out independent review and check the status of ongoing important projects worth over Rs 500 crore. It will also recommend methods to improve the capital acquisition process.
  • The committee will review various categories of projects like “Buy” (Indian) and “Buy and Make” (Indian).

3) South Central Railway becomes 1st rail zone with 100% LED lighting at stations

  • On 7th February 2018, South Central Railway (SCR) announced that, it has become the first railway zone in India to achieve 100 % LED lighting at every station under its jurisdiction.
  • South Central Railway (SCR) chief public relations officer M Umashankar Kumar  said that, SCR has become the first zone in Indian Railways to accomplish 100 % LED lighting in all 733 stations under its jurisdiction.
  • He also said that, this LED lighting facility would save 32 lakh units of electrical energy amounting to Rs 2.7 crore per year.

4) RBI To Set Up Ombudsman For Non-Banking Finance Companies

  • The Reserve Bank of India announced setting up ombudsman for addressing customer grievances in the non-banking finance companies. The rules will be laid out by the end of February 2018.
  • RBI will start with deposit-taking NBFCs and widen the scope to cover NBFCs with asset size of Rs 100 crore. There are around 20 banking ombudsmen have been appointed with offices mostly in state capitals.

5) Karnataka panel proposes 3-colour official state flag

  • Karnataka committee to analyse possibility of a separate flag for the state has submitted a report, suggesting an official three-coloured flag to replace an unofficial two-coloured flag currently in use.
  • In June 2017, Karnataka’s Kannada and Culture department appointed a committee to study the possibility of having a separate flag for Karnataka.
  • The committee was headed by G S Siddaramaya, chairman of Kannada Development Authority.  
  • This committee has recommended a flag in yellow and red colour, with white colour in the middle containing the state symbol.

6) Dubai Retains Rank As World’s Busiest International Airport In 2017

  • Dubai International Airport has held on to its No 1 ranking as the world’s busiest airport for international travel, after seeing around 88.2 million passengers in 2017.
  • Dubai International Airport first surpassed London Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport for international traffic in 2014. It has maintained the title ever since, with some 90 airlines flying into  Dubai, a gateway for East-West travel.

7) First Ever Chat Based Job Search App ‘Empzilla’ Launched

  • The first ever of its kind in the country chat-based job search mobile app ‘Empzilla’ is being launched that will do away with existing limitations of employers and job seekers making selection process quick and cost-effective.
  • The mobile app gets the conversation between employers and job seekers going in seconds and the latter can chat with the potential employers.

8) THE World University Rankings 2018: More Indian Universities in Asia’s Top 200

  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay are the only two Indian institutions to feature among Top 50 educational institutes in Asia in TIMES Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking’s. 
  • Among Indian institutes, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) ranked highest at 29th. IISc is followed by IIT, Bombay at 44th. Total 17 institutes from India featured in the list this year.
  • Interestingly, although number of Indian institutes featuring in the list has increased, rank of many institutes has dropped as compared to last year.
  • National University of Singapore has been adjudged as Asia’s top university for the third consecutive year.

9) 5th South Asia Region Public Procurement Conference Held In New Delhi

  • The Fifth edition of South Asia Region Public Procurement Conference was held in New Delhi. It was hosted by Public Procurement Division (PPD) of Ministry of Finance and All India Management Association (AIMA).
  • It was held under auspices of South Asia Region Public Procurement Network (SARPPN), which is sponsored and facilitated by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank. The theme this edition of the conference was “Public Procurement and Service Delivery”.

10) Bangladesh elects Abdul Hamid as president for second consecutive term

  • On 7th February 2018, Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid was re-elected unopposed for another five-year term.
  • Abdul Hamid has been re-elected as Bangladesh President for a second 5 year term  as no one else contested for the President post. Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda made this announcement.
  • The Awami League had nominated Abdul Hamid as Presidential candidate. Abdul Hamid is 74 years old. He was first elected as President of Bangladesh in 2013. He has 60 years of experience in politics.

11) Hardayal Prasad appointed as SBI Card MD & CEO

  • On 5th February 2018, Hardayal Prasad was appointed as Managing Director and CEO of SBI Card.
  • Hardayal Prasad replaces Vijay Jasuja. Vijay Jasuja retired on 31st January 2018. Hardayal Prasad’s appointment as MD and CEO came to effect from 1st February 2018.
  • Hardayal Prasad joined State Bank of India in 1983 as a Probationary Officer. He has worked in various locations in different circles and countries. He has vast experience in many areas of banking.

1) RBI Releases Sixth Bi- Monthly Monetary Policy, Repo Rate Unchanged At 6%

  • On February 7, 2018, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced Sixth Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement for financial year 2017-18. This time too, the Policy Repo Rate has been kept unchanged.
  • Post the Sixth Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement announcement, the policy rates and reserve ratios are as follows:
    Policy Repo Rate 6.00% Unchanged – since 2nd August 2017
    Reverse Repo Rate 5.75% Unchanged – since 2nd August 2017
    Marginal Standing Facility Rate 6.25% Unchanged – since 2nd August 2017
    Bank Rate 6.25% Unchanged – since 2nd August 2017
    Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) 4.00% Unchanged – since 9th February 2013
    Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) 19.50% With Effect from 14th October 2017


  • Repo Rate has been kept unchanged at 6.00 per cent. Consequently, the Reverse Repo Rate at 5.75 per cent, marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 6.25 per cent too remains unchanged.

2) Commerce Ministry Launches Tools To Rank States, UTs On Startup Ecosystem

  • On February 6, 2017, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu launched three tools – States and Union Territory Startup Ranking Framework, Compendium of Good Practices for Promoting Startups in India and the Startup India Kit – for ranking States and Union Territories (UTs) on startup ecosystem.
  • Impact of each step initiated at the local level for building a strong Startup ecosystem will be measured under this framework.
  • This framework has been developed on basis of the feedback collected from Startup ecosystem stakeholders’ viz. startup mentors, investors, incubators and accelerators.
  • Steps taken for facilitating/promoting Seed funding and women entrepreneurship have been accorded higher weightage.
  • Feedback on actions and initiatives undertaken by states/UTs has been taken into consideration. The actions and initiatives include having a startup cell, helpline, mobile or web portal for queries, size of the startup mentor network created by local government and the number of incubators

3) RBI To Link Base Rate With MCLR

  • The Reserve Bank of India will link the base rate with the MCLR from 1st of April 2018 to ensure expeditious transmission of its policy rate to borrowers. The RBI had introduced the Marginal Cost of Funds based Lending Rates (MCLR) system with effect from 1st April 2016, the Central bank observed that a large proportion of bank loans continue to be linked to Base Rate.
  • According to the RBI Deputy Governor NS Vishwanathan, it has been decided to harmonize the methodology of determining benchmark rates by linking base rate to MCLR as it is more sensitive to policy rate signals.

4) GST rate on amusement parks and ballet etc, reduced from 28% to 18%.

  • At 25th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council held in New Delhi on January 18, 2018, it was recommended that GST rate on services by way of admission to Amusement Parks may be reduced from 28% to 18%.
  • The recommendation to reduce GST rate on entry to amusement parks was in response to requests received from several quarters that amusement parks promote social wellness and are avenues to attain fun and learning for children and their families in a real active entertainment.
  • On January 25, 2018, a notification was issued giving effect to this recommendations of GST Council. 

5) Nuclear-Capable Prithvi-II Missile Successfully Test-Fired

  • India successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile as part of a user trial by the Army from Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, in Odisha. It is a surface-to-surface missile and has a strike range of 350 km.
  • Prithvi-II is capable of carrying 500-1,000 kilogram of warheads and is thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engines.
  • About Prithvi-II Missile in Brief-
    Inducted into the Armed forces of the country in 2003, the nine-metre-tall, single-stage liquid-fuelled Prithvi-II is the first missile to have been developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).

6) Centre allocated Rs 5252 crore for railway infra development in Odisha

  • Under Union Budget 2018, Central Government has allocated Rs 5252 crore for different railway projects in Odisha.
  • This year’s allocation is the highest ever budgetary allocation for railway infra development in Odisha till date.
  • In Union Budget 2017, budgetary allocation for railway infra development in Odisha was Rs. 5102 crore, while for 2016 , it was Rs. 4682 crore.
  • Despite of highest budgetary allocation this year, Odisha State Government is not pleased because it had demanded Rs 6500 crore for the development of railway sector in the state.

7) South Asia Region Public Procurement Conference held in New Delhi

  • 5th South Asia Region Public Procurement Conference is being held in New Delhi from 5th – 7th February, 2018.
  • The Conference was inaugurated by Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley. It is being hosted by government of India through the Public Procurement Division (PPD) of the Ministry of Finance and All India Management Association (AIMA).
  • It is being held under the auspices of the South Asia Region Public Procurement Network (SARPPN). 
  • SARPPN is sponsored and facilitated by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank.

8) Assam to set up dedicated agency for business, investments

  • On 6th February 2018, Google and NCERT signed an agreement to integrate ‘Digital Citizenship and Safety’ course in information and communication technology curriculum.
  • The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) contains a curriculum on IT and communication technologies in its teachers training programme.
  • Students from class I to XII will be trained using the curriculum developed jointly by NCERT and Google.  Students from nearly 1.4 million schools in India will be trained.
  • This curriculum has four themes – being smart, being safe, being a digital citizen and being future ready. No fee is charged by Google for this training.

9) Jhulan Goswami 1st Woman In The World To Take 200 ODI Wickets

  • Indian women’s cricket team pacer Jhulan Goswami has become the first woman in the world to take 200 wickets in ODI cricket.
  • Goswami achieved the feat playing in her 166th ODI against South Africa. Goswami had become the leading wicket-taker in women’s ODI in May 2017, overtaking former Australian pacer Cathryn Fitzpatrick’s record of 180 wickets.

10) Kathakali Maestro Madavoor Vasudevan Nair Passes Away

  • Kathakali maestro Madavoor Vasudevan Nair collapsed on stage and died while performing at Agasthyacodu Mahadeva Temple, Kerala. He was 89.

  • A recipient of several awards, including Padma Bhushan, he was the follower of the Kaplingattu School, the particular style of south Kerala.

1) Govt body sets up mechanism for tech transfer to small-scale industries

  • Union Science and Technology Minister, Harsh Vardhan has stated that Government has set up a mechanism in the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for regular interface with small-scale industry (SSI) for transfer of technologies from CSIR laboratories to industries.
  • A nodal officer has been appointed in CSIR, tasked with the responsibility to coordinate with the small-scale industry and the CSIR labs for appropriate technology required by them.
  • This decision has been taken in response to concerns raised by leaders of Laghu Udyog Bharati that there was a “disconnect between CSIR and the small-scale industries and it should be addressed”.

2) First-ever Pelican Bird Festival held at Atapaka Bird Sanctuary

  • On 4th February 2018, ‘Pelican Bird Festival-2018’ was held at the Atapaka Bird Sanctuary on Kolleru Lake, in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The Pelican Bird Festival-2018 was jointly organised by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA) and Krishna district administration.
  • Andhra Pradesh Tourism minister Bhuma Akhila Priya and Krishna District collector B Lakshmikantham inaugurated the Pelican Bird Festival-2018.
  • A rally was organized from Kaikaluru town to Atapaka bird sanctuary during the festival.  Thousands of artists, students and officials of the tourism department participated in the rally.

3) President Ram Nath Kovind Inaugurates Mahamastakabhisheka Utsav

  • The President of India Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the 88th Mahamastakabhisheka Utsav of Lord Gomateshwara in Hassan district of Karnataka.
  • Mahamastakabhisheka of Gommateshwara, who is also known as Bahubali takes place once in 12 years. It is an important Jain pilgrimage centre and lakhs of tourists visit Shravanbelagola to see 57 feet tall monolithic stone statue that is anointed from head to feet during the Utsav.

4) Commerce Minister Kicks Off Consultations On The New Industrial Policy

  • Commerce and Industries Minister Mr Suresh Prabhu set off a series of nation-wide consultations with the industry on the proposed new Industrial Policy. The first consultation was held at Guwahati in February 2018.
  • The event, organized by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) in partnership with Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), was attended by more than 120 industrialists from the North East in addition to government officials from the North Eastern States.

5) Ministry of Railways signs MoU with Ministry of Ayush to augment Ayush services in Railway hospitals

  • On February 6, 2018, Ministry of Railways signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ministry of Ayush in New Delhi to scale up Ayush services in Railway’s Zonal hospitals.
  • As per the MoU, Ayush Services will be augmented at  B. R. Singh Hospital (Kolkata) in Eastern Railway, Perambur Railway Hospital (Chennai) in Southern Railway, Central Hospital (New Delhi) of Northern Railway, JR Hospital (Mumbai) in Western Railway and the Central Hospital of Northeast Frontier Railway (Guwahati).
  • The MoU was signed in presence of  Minister of State of Railways – Manoj Sinha, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH – Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State of Railways – Rajen Gohain and Chairman of Railway Board – Ashwani Lohani.

6) India FY2019 fiscal deficit to come in at 3.5% of GDP: Report

  • According to the report by BMI Research, India’s fiscal deficit in financial year 2018-19 is expected to come in at 3.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
  • Situation wherein, a government’s total expenditures exceeds the revenue that it generates is referred to as fiscal deficit.
  • BMI’s projection is higher than Government’s fiscal deficit target of 3.3 per cent of GDP, announced in Union Budget 2018.
  • BMI has justified its projection by highlighting that as per overall expenditure quantum announced in Union Budget 2018, Indian Government looks keen to promote economic growth during 2018-19, which may reduce its pace of fiscal consolidation.

7) Sweden Commits Record $370m Of Aid To UN World Food Programme

  • Sweden and the United Nations World Food Programme signed a Strategic Partnership Agreementcommitting an unprecedented $370 million dollars to WFP over the next four years. The contribution for the period 2018-2021 is the biggest ever made by a donor within a WFP Strategic Partnership Agreement.
  • For almost a decade, the Swedish government has been the largest donor of flexible funds to WFP whereas 90% of government funding to WFP is earmarked for specific operations or activities.

8) Google launches #SecurityCheckKiya campaign to protect data, devices

  • On February 5, 2018,  Google launched a public initiative “#SecurityCheckKiya” to create awareness around Internet safety and to protect young and first-time web users from account hijacking, safeguard Android devices from malicious mobile applications and secure their personal data.
  • On account of easy access to internet, large number of first time Internet users have now come online.
  • These users typically lack technical alertness to safeguard themselves in online environment and are thus vulnerable to bad actors and abuse on the web.
  • Google has made related information available on its homepage and is encouraging users to take the first step of Security Check on Safer Internet Day (February 6).

9) NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant gets extension till June 30, 2019

  • On 5th February 2018, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant was given an extension till 30th June 2019.
  •  Amitabh Kant was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog on 17th February 2016 for a two-year term.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension of Amitabh Kant as CEO of NITI Aayog till 30th June 2019.
  • Amitabh Kant is a 1980 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre. Earlier, he was Secretary in Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.

10) Capgemini to buy LiquidHub for about 400 million euros

  • On 5th February 2018, Capgemini said that, it will acquire LiquidHub to enhance its digital-consulting capabilities in North America.
  • The cost of acquisition is estimated to be nearly 400 million euros. This amount is said to be twice that of LiquidHub’s 2017 revenue.
  • Capgemini said that, the transaction would be closed in the next 2 months. LiquidHub is a digital technology services company.

11) Mumbai Airport Becomes World’s Busiest Single-Runway Airport

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport of Mumbai sets record with 980 flights in 24 hours or almost one flight every minute.
  • With this, the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport bettered its own feat of 974 flights in 24 hours, recorded in December 2017. While Gatwick, the U.K.’s second-largest airport, remains the most efficient single-runway airport in the world.

12) Jerome H Powell Sworn In As 16th Chairman Of Federal Reserve

  • Jerome H Powell was sworn in as the 16th Chairman of the Federal Reserve for a four-year term. Mr Powell has succeeded Janet Yellen, the first woman to lead the US central bank in its 100-year history.
  • Powell was nominated for the post in November 2017 by President Donald Trump. The oath was administered by Vice Chairman Randal K. Quarles in the Board Room.

13) International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation – 6 February

  • On 6th February 2018, International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation was observed all over the world.
  • Female genital mutilation (FGM) means removing or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. This practice is considered as a violation of girls’ and women’s rights all over the world.
  • UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) and UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) are organizing a world-level programme to eliminate FGM. Its main focus is on 17 African countries.

1) Centre clears Rs 62crore for cleaning Sal river

  • The central government has approved a project to abate pollution of river Sal at Navelim in Goa at an estimated cost of Rs 61.7 crore.
  • The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had in 2015 identified the river stretch at Navelim as one of the 302 polluted river stretches across the country based on bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels – a key indicator of organic pollution showing water quality.

2)IWAI Signs Project Agreement with World Bank for Jal Marg Vikas Project

  • Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has signed a project agreement with the World Bank for Jal Marg Vikas Project on river Ganga. The World Bank entered into a USD 375 million loan agreement with the Department of Economic Affairs, Union Ministry of Finance for Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP).
  • Jal Marg Vikas Project, which is expected to be completed by March 2023, is being implemented with the financial and technical support of the World Bank.

3) UP government in association with UNICEF launches DASTAK campaign

  • In Uttar Pradesh, State government in association with UNICEF launched massive door to door campaign DASTAK to eradicate deadly Acute Encephalitis Syndrome and Japanise Encephalitis disease in the state.
  • The war cry of DASTAK is Darwaja khatkhatao, AES aur JE ko bhagao.
  • In DASTAK campaign, Whole state machinery with the help of UNICEF will now literally go door to door in 38 JES and AE affected districts which mostly fall in the Tarai region of the state which contributes to about 60 percent of the total AES cases all over the country.

4) SriLanka Celebrates 70th Independence Day

  • SriLanka celebrated the 70th Independence Day in a grand ceremony at the Galle Face Green in Colombo. The theme of the ceremony was “One Nation”.
  • It was on this day in 1948 that country achieved freedom from British rule. Representing Britain’s Queen, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and the Countess of Wessex participated in the celebrations as Chief Guests.

5)Japan Launches Smallest Rocket Ever to Carry Tiny Satellite into Orbit

  • The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the world’s smallest rocket with the ability to put a tiny satellite into orbit. The rocket lifted off from the Uchinoura Space Center.
  • It carried a microsatellite TRICOM-1R, a three-unit CubeSat weighing about 3 kilograms. This satellite launch was a re-flight of the TRICOM-1 mission, which was lost in SS-520’s failure in 2017.
    The launch was aimed at testing the ability of JAXA to launch low-cost rockets that can put microsatellites into space at affordable rates.

6) Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades Wins Re-Election for 2nd Term

  • Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has won re-election for a second term. The official final result after a second-round run-off put the conservative incumbent on 55.99% of the vote, ahead of Communist-backed Stavros Malas on 44%.
  • Anastasiades has taken credit for steering the economy of Cyprus to recovery after it was plunged into crisis in 2013 by its exposure to debt-wracked Greece and fiscal slippage under a former left-wing administration.

7) After 154 years, Nepali tea receives international trademark

  • Nepalese tea has finally received an international trademark, over a century-and-a-half after cultivation began in the country.
  • Nepali tea producers used to export tea with the respective companies’ names or logos. Now, the tea will be sold in the international market with a common logo, which represents the national identity.

8)Jasprit Bumrah, Harmanpreet Kaur in Forbes India 30 Under 30 List

  • Indian cricketers Jasprit Bumrah and Harmanpreet Kaur as well India women’s hockey team goalkeeper Savita Punia and shooter Heena Sidhu are among Forbes India 30 Under 30 list.
  • Bumrah finished the year 2017 as the third highest wicket-taker in ODIs with 39 scalps in 23 matches, whereas in T20Is he grabbed 12 wickets in 11 outings. In December 2016, Harmanpreet became the first Indian woman cricketer to play in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).

9) ‘Exam Warriors’- A Book Penned Down by PM Modi Released

  • The book penned down by PM Narendra Modi named ‘Exam Warriors’ was launched to reach out to the students across the country ahead of their exams. The book was released by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
  • The book has been written to inspire youths to face the difficult moments of examinations and life, with fresh and new energy. ‘Exam Warriors’ is published by Penguin India, which runs into 208 pages.

1) Maharashtra govt approves new wildlife sanctuary at Ghodazari

  • Maharashtra State Government has approved Ghodazari in Chandrapur district as a new wildlife sanctuary in the state.
  • This decision was taken at the 13th meeting of the Maharashtra State Board for Wildlife, held on January 31, 2018.
  • The meeting was chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
  • The new wildlife sanctuary will include 159 sq km of Brahmapuri forest. This decision will not only help in conserving the forest but will also benefit nearly 40 villages in the region on account of consequential increase of tourism related activities.

2) International Conference on ‘Demetrios Galanos and His Legacy’ begins in New Delhi

  • International Conference on ‘Demetrios Galanos and His Legacy’ was inaugurated at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in New Delhi on February 3, 2018.
  • Demetrios Galanos was a Greek scholar who came to India to study in the nineteenth century. He stayed in India for 47 years (for 40 years he lived in the city of Varanasi).
  • During the course of his stay, Demetrios Galanos compiled a Sanskrit-English-Greek lexicon of about 9000 words. He also translated the Bhagvad Gita into Greek.
  • 8-day International Conference on ‘Demetrios Galanos and His Legacy’ is being held in Delhi as well as Varanasi. It has been organised by IGNCA.

3) Government makes PAN mandatory for transactions over Rs. 2.5 lakh

  • As announced in Union Budget 2018, providing Permanent Account Number (PAN) will be mandatory for any entity entering into a financial transaction of Rs 2.5 lakh or more with effect from April 1, 2018.
  • As per Finance Bill 2018, through which the Budget is passed, Permanent Account Number (PAN) would be used as Unique Entity Number for non-individuals.
  • Thus, every non-individual entity shall be required to apply to the Assessing Officer for allotment of PAN.
  • It has also been proposed that managing director, director,  CEO, partner , founder or any person competent to act on behalf of such entities shall also apply to the Assessing Officer for allotment of PAN.

4) PM Modi Inaugurates Investors’ Summit In Assam

  • One hundred and sixty MoUs with investment proposals of over 64,000 crore rupees were signed on the opening day of the first ever global investors summit at Guwahati in Assam.
  • The summit hosted by the Assam government is a new beginning and will open a new chapter in boosting the relationship with ASEAN countries. The MoUs were signed by hundreds of industry leaders for investment in the state.

5) India contributes $1 mn to UN Development Partnership Fund

  • On February 1, 2018, India contributed an additional $1 million to the India-UN Development Partnership Fund earmarked for South-South cooperation.
  • This latest contribution of India is aimed at intensifying its partnerships with other developing countries.
  • India-UN Development Partnership Fund was launched in June 2017  for supporting sustainable development projects in Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States.
  • India has pledged a multi-year contribution of $100 million to this fund, out of which, it has already provided $6 million so far.

6) Environment Ministry launches ‘Green Good Deeds’ campaign for climate change and global warming

  • On February 3, 2018, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr Harsh Vardhan appealed to the teaching community to join the ‘Green Good Deeds’ campaign.
  • This campaign has been launched by Environment Ministry to sensitise students about climate change and global warming.
  • ’Gree Goof Deeds’ campaign is based on the premise that it is the moral responsibility of current generation to restore and return the clean and green environment to the next generation.
  • A mobile application – ‘Dr Harsh Vardhan’ has also been launched to reach out to people across India and provide information about ‘Green Good Deeds’ campaign.

7) CRISIL, SIDBI Launch India’s First MSE Sentiment Index

  • The Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Mr Arun Jaitley launched CriSidEx , India’s first sentiment index for micro and small enterprises ( MSEs) developed jointly by CRISIL & SIDBI.
  • CriSidEx is a composite index based on a diffusion index of 8 parameters and measures MSE business sentiment on a scale of 0 (extremely negative ) to 200 ( extremely positive). CriSidEx will have 2 indices , one for the ‘survey quarter’ and another for the ‘next quarter’ once a trend emerges after few rounds of the survey , providing independent time series data.

8) Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain appointed new chief justice of Bangladesh

  • Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain has been appointed as Chief Justice of Bangladesh.
  • Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid administered Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain’s oath as the 22nd chief justice of the Supreme Court in Dhaka.
  • The previous Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned in November 2017. Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah was appointed as the acting chief justice.
  • Syed Mahmud Hossain was born on 31 December 1954. He started practicing as a lawyer in 1981.

9) MIFF 2018 honours Shyam Benegal with V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award

  • On 3rd February 2018, film maker Shyam Benegal was awarded the V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award of the Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Shorts & Animation Films – MIFF 2018.’
  • The V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Shyam Benegal by C Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of Maharashtra, at the MIFF 2018 Valedictory Function at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai.
  • The award consisted of a Trophy, a shawl, citation and cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs. The award recognizes Shyam Benegal’s contribution to the documentary movements in India.
  • He has made 28 feature films and 41 documentaries.  ‘Satyajit Ray’ and ‘Nehru’ are some of his award winning films. He has also received Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

10) Saurav Ghosal Becomes The Highest-Ranked Indian Squash Player

  • India’s leading squash player, Saurav Ghosal jumped five places to No. 14 to become the highest ranked Indian in the latest Professional Squash Association (PSA) rankings.
  • Ghosal beat Joshna Chinappa who slipped three places to No. 17 while Dipika Pallikal Karthik remained on 20. Former Indian national champion Harinder Pal Sandhu was placed at 49th. 

11) India Lifts U-19 World Cup 2018

  • India has defeated Australia to lift the Under 19 World cup for the fourth time. The Men in Blue defeated the three-time champions Australia at Bay Oval, New Zealand.
  • The Australian team had set the target of  217 runs and was chased down easily by India. Manjot Kalra was the Hero of the match with his brilliant century.

12) World Cancer Day – February 4

  • On 4th February 2018, World Cancer Day was observed all over the world.
  • World Cancer Day is observed every year on 4th February. The World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in the idea of supporting the goals of World Cancer Declaration that was written in 2008.
  • World Cancer Day aims to spread awareness about cancer, its prevention, detection, and treatment. Its main aim is to reduce illness and death due to cancer by 2020.

  • 32nd Surajkund International Crafts Mela began on February 2, 2018 in Surajkund, Haryana. It was inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
  • This event provides a platform for the artists and craftsmen from across the world to showcase their countries’ rich diversity, cuisine and traditions.
  • It has been organised by the Surajkund Mela Authority in collaboration with Haryana tourism department, Haryana tourism corporation and Union Ministries of Tourism, Textile, Culture and External Affairs.
  • For this year’s edition, Uttar Pradesh (UP) has been chosen as theme state and will showcase religious tourism circuit in UP,  such as Ayodhya, Mathura, Kashi. It will also showcase UP’s art, culture, and heritage of UP.

2) UAE Launches World’s Longest Zip Line

  • The United Arab Emirates has made a record by opening the world’s longest zip line, measuring 2.83 km in length. Guinness World Records officials certified the zip line in Ras al-Khaimah.
  • The Jebel Jais Flight takes thrill-seekers atop the country’s largest mountain peak, from a launch pad 1,680 meters (5,512 feet) above sea level.

3) Cochin Shipyard Limited signs MoU with Russian firm for development of vessels

  • Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), Russia to collaborate and engage in Design, Development and Execution of contemporary, State-of-Art vessels for Inland and Coastal Waterways.
  • The MoU was signed by Madhu S Nair – Chairman & Managing Director, Cochin Shipyard Limited and Mr Alexey Rakhmanov – President, United Shipbuilding Corporation, in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources – Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi.
  • Under the MoU both entities will collaborate for development of High-Speed Vessels, Passenger Vessels, River-Sea Cargo Vessels, Dredgers and other watercrafts for inland waterways and coastal shipping. 

4) DoT to set up 5G development centre in tie-up with IIT Chennai

  • On 1st February 2018, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, announced that, the Department of Telecom (DoT) in partnership with IIT, Chennai, will set up a development centre for 5G technologies.
  • The development centre to be set up by Department of Telecom in collaboration with IIT, Chennai will work on the development of 5G technologies.
  • 5G technology will help to provide applications like Internet of Things and Machine-to-Machine internet.
  • A similar tie up had already been made between Ericsson and IIT Delhi. Under this tie up, a Center of Excellence for 5G will be established.

5) IOB Receives Rs173 Cr Capital Infusion From Government

  • Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has received Rs173.06 crore capital infusion from the government in the current fiscal.
  • In a regulatory filing, IOB has received Rs173.06 crore a the contribution of the central government in the preferential allotment of equity shares of the bank as government’s investment during the 2017-18 fiscal.

6) Neelam Kapur Appointed DG Of Sports Authority Of India

  • Senior-most Indian Information Service (IIS) officer Neelam Kapur was appointed Director-General of Sports Authority of India (SAI).
  • She is at present the Principal Director General of the Directorate of Field Publicity (DFP). It is for the first time that an IIS officer has been appointed as SAI chief. The post is usually held by an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.

7) Shabnam Asthana wins Times Power Woman 2017 award

  • Dilip Kamble, Minister of State for Social Justice and Special Assistance in the Government of Maharashtra, presented the ‘Times Power Woman 2017′- Pune for Global PR award to Shabnam Asthana.
  • The Times Group celebrated the Times Power Woman 2017 (Pune) awards recently to honour the achievements of women who have also been sources of inspiration.
  • These awards were presented to the women of Pune. 34 women with power, supremacy, command and control were awarded.

8) 7th India Energy Congress Held In New Delhi

  • The 7th India Energy Congress was held in New Delhi. Over 400 experts are expected to brainstorm on energy transition across the globe in view of technology and digital disruptions. The theme of the 7th edition of India Energy Congress is ‘Energy 4.0: Energy Transition Towards 2030’.
  • The India Energy Congress is the flagship event of World Energy Council India (WEC India) and joint event of ministries of power, coal, new & renewable energy, petroleum & natural gas, external affairs and Department of Atomic Energy.

9) India Open Boxing: Mary Kom Clinches Gold, India Bag 10 Medals

  • The five-time World Champion MC Mary Kom claimed the gold medal in the India Open International Boxing tournament at Thyagraj Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. She defeated Josie Gabuco from the Philippines in a split 4-1 decision to grab the gold in the women’s 48kg weight category.
  • The 12th seeded boxer had earlier booked her place in the finals after defeating Mongolian Altansetseg Lutsaikhan in the semi-final clash. Pinki Rani also fetched gold for India after defeating Mongolia’s Jargalan Ochirbat in the final of fly (48-51 kg) category.

10) Alphabet names board veteran John Hennessy as chairman

  • On 1st February 2018, John Hennessy was appointed as Chairman of Alphabet’s Board.
  • John Hennessy succeeds Eric Schmidt. Eric Schmidt was Executive Chairman of Alphabet’s Board for a long time.
  • John Hennessy is former president of Stanford University. He is 65 years old. He joined Google’s board in 2004.
  • John Hennessy has held the post of lead independent director at Google and Alphabet since 2007.

11) Saurav Ghosal becomes the highest-ranked Indian squash player in PSA rankings

  • India’s Saurav Ghosal with rank number 14 became the highest ranked Indian in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) rankings released on 2nd February 2018.
  • Saurav Ghosal has moved 5 places up and obtained the 14th rank. He has surpassed Joshna Chinappa who is currently at 17th position. 
  • Dipika Pallikal is at rank 20. Harinder Pal Sandhu is at 49th position. Mahesh Mangaonkar ranks 64. Vikram Malhotra is ranked 68.

12) World Wetlands Day – February 2

  • On 2nd February 2018, World Wetlands Day was observed all over the world.
  • The theme for World Wetlands Day 2018 is: “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future”.
  • On 2nd February 2018 every year, the World Wetlands Day is celebrated. On the same day in 1971, the Convention on Wetlands was adopted in Ramsar, Iran.
  • The Convention on Wetlands is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.

1) 7th India Energy Congress begins in New Delhi

  • 7th India Energy Congress focusing on the theme ‘Energy 4.0: Energy Transition Towards 2030’ begun in New Delhi on February 1, 2018.
  • India Energy Congress is the flagship event of World Energy Council India (WEC India), which functions under the Union Power Ministry.
  • 7th India Energy Congress has been jointly organised by Union Ministries of Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy, Petroleum & Natural Gas, External Affairs and Department of Atomic Energy.
  • On February 1, 2018, Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister addressed the inaugural session of 7th India Energy Congress.

2) India Joins Ashgabat Agreement

  • India has joined Ashgabat Agreement on the establishment of an International Transport and Transit Corridor between the Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The agreement was signed in 2011, which envisages facilitation of transit and transportation of goods between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf.
  • According to the External Affairs Ministry, the accession to the Agreement would diversify India’s connectivity options with Central Asia and have a positive influence on its trade and commercial ties with the region.

3) Home Ministry allots Rs. 370 crore to strengthen border infrastructure

  • Union Home Ministry has sanctioned nearly Rs. 370 crore to Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to strengthen border infrastructure along Indo-Pak and Indo-China border.
  • BSF will use the funds primarily for construction of bunkers and fortifying its border out posts along Indo-Pak border.
  • ITBP will use the amount for construction of climate-controlled huts and procurement of snow scooter.
  • It is to be noted that BSF is India’s first line of Defense along the 2526.86-km-long Indo-Pak border (including 237.2 km of the Line of Control) and 4096.7 km of the Indo-Bangladesh border.

4) Centre sanctions Rs 1500 cr for organic farming in Uttarakhand

  • Central Government has sanctioned Rs 1500 crore to promote organic farming in Uttarakhand.
  • The amount was sanctioned by Union Agriculture Minister, Radha Mohan Singh during his meeting with Uttarakhand  Chief Minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat in New Delhi on January 30, 2018. The amount of Rs. 1500 crore will be disbursed over a period of three years.
  • This decision is to manifest Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to develop Uttarakhand as an organic state.

5) Indian Railways to set up Coach Factory in Maharashtra

  • Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said that, a coach factory will be set up by the Indian Railways in Latur district, Maharashtra.
  • Decision regarding this was taken at a meeting between Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
  • This coach factory will produce Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) for suburbantrains and coaches for metro trains.
  • Work regarding this project will be carried out with high priority and all approvals will be done in a fast track pace. The Maharashtra government has provided concessions in land, taxes, etc. for this project.

6) Rwanda becomes first poor country to provide eye care for all

  • Rwanda has become the first low-income country in the world to provide universal eye care for its 12 million citizens.
  • Rwanda government has partnered with Vision for a Nation (VFAN), a UK-based charity organization, to train 3,000 eye care nurses in 502 local health centres.
  • They would prescribe glasses to patients and direct them to national clinics in case of serious eye problems.
  • The most common eye problem in Rwanda is short sightedness. Coffee bean sorting is one of the major means of income for Rwanda women. Their eye sight deteriorates as they reach 45 years, and hence their livelihood and means of income are affected.

7) India’s GDP growth fell to 7.1% in 2016-17 from 8.2% in 2015-16: CSO

  • According to the CSO’s revised estimates of national income released on January 31, 2018, gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate for 2015-16 stood at 8.2% from the earlier estimates of 8% while for 2016-17, revised GDP growth remained unchanged at 7.1%.
  • For 2015-16, this is the second revised estimate, while for 2016-17, this is the first revised estimate.
  • Revised estimates are arrived at by taking into consideration a wider range of numbers, including employment data.

8) Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen appointed as Vice Chairman of USISPF Board

  • Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe, has been named the Vice Chairman of US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) Board.
  • Shantanu Narayen is an Indian-American. USISPF was formed to improve trade ties between India and the US. Now the USISPF Board has 31 board members.
  • Other members who have joined the USISPF Board recently are: Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director of Spice Jet Limited and John Kern, senior vice president of Supply Chain Operations at Cisco.

9) Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrates 41st Foundation Day

  • On 1st February 2018, the Indian Coast Guard celebrated its 41st Foundation Day.
  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) was established in 1978. It was started with only 7 ships. It was formed to enforce National Laws in the Indian waters and safeguard life and property at sea.

1) FY16 GDP Growth Revised Up To 8.2%, FY17 Unchanged At 7.1%- CSO

  • The Central Statistics Office (CSO) revised the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate for 2015-16 to 8.2% from the earlier estimates of 8% and kept the 2016-17 growth unchanged at 7.1%. The real GDP or GDP at constant (2011-12) prices for the years 2016-17 and 2015-16 stand at Rs121.96 trillion and Rs113.86 trillion respectively, according to the CSO statement.
  • In terms of real gross value added (GVA), it stated that the GVA at constant (2011-12) basic prices grew 7.1% in 2016- 17, as against a growth of 8.1% in 2015-16. According to advance GDP estimates of CSO, the GVA growth on 2011-12 price was estimated at 6.6% for 2016-17. Under the third revision, the CSO has estimated GDP growth in 2014-15 at 7.4% from earlier estimates of 7.5%.

2) Bihar cabinet grants Rs 105 crore for Bihar Mahadalit Vikas Mission

  • On 30th January 2018, the Bihar cabinet allocated funds worth Rs 105 crore for Bihar Mahadalit Vikas Mission, which formulates and implements schemes for the most backward sections among the Scheduled Castes.
  • This was declared in a Bihar cabinet meeting headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.The Bihar Mahadalit Vikas Mission was established in 2008. It is an autonomous body and functions under the SC/ST Welfare Department.
  • In the cabinet meeting, it was also decided to construct a high security jail in Phulwarisharif block of Patna. The construction of this jail would cost around Rs 56.72 crore. Maoists and dangerous criminals will be held in this jail.

3) India Slips To 42nd Place On Global Democracy Index; Norway Tops The List

  • India has ranked 42nd on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Global Democracy Index 2017. This marks a drop by 10 spots as compared to 32nd rank last year.
  • The five categories are – electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, civil liberties, political participation and political culture.
  • Countries in the index have been placed under four broad categories full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime and authoritarian regime. Global Democracy Index was first published in 2006.
  • London-Headquartered EIU (founded in 1946) is owned by the Economist Group.

4) INS Karanj- Third Scorpene Class Submarine Launched By Indian Navy

  • Indian Navy launched ‘INS Karanj’, the third of the six indigenous Scorpene-class submarines. The submarine, equipped with superior stealth features and precision-guided weapons, has been built at Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.
  • Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff, was the chief guest on the occasion. The submarine has an overall length of 67.5 meters and a height of about 12.3 metres.

5) Axis Bank Launches 4th Edition Of “Evolve”

  • Private sector Axis Bank launched the fourth edition of ‘Evolve’ in Coimbatore, Tamil NaduIt is an annual multi-city knowledge series for Bank’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) customers. The current edition of ‘evolve’ is titled as “Transform your Family Business into your dream company”.
  • It will empower the SMEs to understand the winning strategies and best practices that have helped some of the leading family businesses in India grow into the reputable enterprise. This edition will span across 30 cities.

6) Lt. Gen Anil Chauhan takes charge as DGMO of Indian Army

  • On 30th January 2018, Lt. Gen Anil Chauhan assumed charge as the new Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army.
  • Lt. Gen Anil Chauhan replaces Lt General A K Bhatt. Lt General A K Bhatt will take charge of Srinagar-based 15 Corps.
  • Lt. Gen Anil Chauhan has held various important posts in the Army. He has vast experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeastern regions.

7) Google Introduces A New App Named “Bulletin”

  • Google has introduced a new app named “Bulletin” that allows anybody to submit stories for and about their communities. This is a free, lightweight app for telling a story by capturing photos, video clips and text right from your phone, published straight to the web.
  • The app is made for contributing hyperlocal stories about your community. The application has been launched as a limited pilot project and is available in Nashville, Tennessee and Oakland, California.

8) Melbourne To Host Final Of 2020 World T20

  • Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the final of both the men’s and women’s World Twenty20 when the tournaments come to Australia in 2020.
  • It will mark the first time the tournaments are held as stand-alone events in the same year in the same country. The women’s final will coincide with International Women’s Day (8th March).

9) World’s oldest man Francisco Nunez Olivera dead at 113

  • On 29th January 2018, Francisco Nunez Olivera named “the world’s oldest man” passed away in Bienvenida village, Spain.
  • He died just a month after he turned 113 years. He was born on 13 December 1904.
  • His long life has been credited to his consumption of vegetables he cultivated in his own land and a glass of red wine every day.
  • Spanish media mentions Francisco Nunez Olivera as the world’s oldest man. But his name is not mentioned in the list of Gerontology Research Group.
