1) Swiss President on 3-Day Visit to India

  • President of Swiss Confederation Doris Leuthard is on the three-day visit to India. A number of agreements are expected to be signed in several areas after the talks.
  • India and Switzerland enjoy robust economic ties, with Switzerland being seventh largest trading partner and eleventh largest foreign investor for India.

2) 10th India-European Union Counter Terrorism Dialogue

  • India and the European Union have agreed to strengthen cooperation between their security and intelligence agencies to combat the threat of terrorism and check terror financing.
  • During the 10th India-European Union Counter Terrorism Dialogue in New Delhi, the two sides deliberated extensively on combating terror financing and challenges posed by radicalization.

3) ISRO All Set to Launch IRNSS-1H

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation is all set to launch PSLV-C39 carrying Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS-1H). The satellite will lift off from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, on board the rocket PSLV C39.
  • The satellite IRNSS-1H is a part of the indigenous navigation system called ‘NavIC,’ that was initially planned to have a constellation of seven satellites. ISRO’s most trusted work horse PSLV, in its forty-first flight (PSLV-C39), will carry and put the 1,425 kg IRNSS-1H into the required orbit.

4) Important Cabinet Approvals- 30th August

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given the following set of approvals. The full list of Cabinet Approvals is given as follows.
    Cabinet has approved-
    1. MoU on “India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund”- India and Israel will make a contribution of four million US Dollars each for the Fund, both equivalent amount, annually for five years. The Innovation Fund will be governed by a joint Board which will consist of four members from each country.
    2. Promulgation of the Goods and Services Tax (Compensation to States) Ordinance, 2017- The approval would allow to increase the maximum rate at which the Compensation Cess can be levied from 15% to 25% on motor vehicles for transport of not more than thirteen persons, including the driver.
    3. MoU with Myanmar for the Conservation of Earthquake-Damaged Pagodas at Bagan.
    4. MoU between India and Brazil for cooperation in the fields of Zebu Cattle Genomics and Assisted Reproductive Technologies.

5) Rajiv Gauba Takes Over as Union Home Secretary

  • Mr. Rajiv Gauba took over as Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Mr. Gauba joined the Ministry of Home Affairs as Officer on Special Duty on June 27, 2017 and took charge as the Union Home Secretary upon the superannuation of Shri Rajiv Mehrishi.

6) CSIR Ranked 9th Public Research Institution of the World

  • India’s largest autonomous public organisation Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has been ranked ninth in the world. The institute has been ranked ninth amongst a total of 1,207 government institutions, according to the Scimago Institutions ranking World Report 2017.
  • It is the only Indian organisation which has found place amongst the Top 100 Global Institutions. The ranking (Government Institutions) was topped by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
  • Girish Sahni was appointed as Director General of CSIR

7) Reliance Foundation Awarded Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar

  • The Reliance Foundation was rewarded with the prestigious Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Award at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Chairperson of the foundation, Nita Ambani collected the award from President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • For its contribution to the promotion of sports, the award went to Reliance Foundation. Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) also received the Rashtriya Khel Protsahana Purushkar for its ‘Identification and Nurturing of Budding and Young Talent’ (IDCO) program.

8) Rajiv Kumar Takes Charge as Niti Aayog Vice-Chairman

  • Economist Rajiv Kumar took over as the vice-chairman of government think tank NITI Aayog. Mr. Kumar replaced Arvind Panagariya, an Indian-American economist who left the think tank to return to academia.
  • Mr. Kumar was a senior fellow at the Centre for Policy Research (CPR). He was a member of the National Security Advisory Board between 2006 and 2008.

9) Rajiv Mehrishi is New CAG of India

  • The outgoing Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi was appointed Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

10) Sunil Arora Appointed Election Commissioner

  • Former bureaucrat Sunil Arora was appointed Election Commissioner by the law Ministry. Mr. Arora’s appointment will be with effect from the day he assumes charge.
  • After Nasim Zaidi retired as Chief Election Commissioner in July, there was a vacancy in the poll panel. While Achal Kumar Joti is the Chief Election Commissioner of India, Om Prakash Rawat is the other Election Commissioner.

11) Konkani Writer Mahabaleshwar Sail Receives 2016 Saraswati Samman

  • Prominent Konkani writer Mahabaleshwar Sail was presented with the Saraswati Samman 2016 for his novel ‘Hawthan’. The novel ‘Hawthan’, published in 2009, captures cultural lives of traditional potter community in Goa.
  •  He was awarded the Sahitya Akadami Award in Konkani language for his short story collection ‘Taranga’ in 1993. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh, a citation and a plaque of goddess Saraswati.

12) Ministry of Railways Signs two MoUs with Switzerland

  • India and Switzerland signed two MoUs in the field of Railways. The two MoUs were signed between Ministry of Railways and Swiss Confederation after high-level talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Doris Leuthard, President of Swiss Confederation during her visit to New Delhi.
  • First MoU
    The MoU was signed between Ministry of Railways and Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, and Communications of the Swiss Confederation for technical cooperation in Rail Sector. The MoU aims at cooperation in the following areas:
    1. Traction Rolling stock
    2. EMU and Train sets
    3. Traction Propulsion Equipment
    4. Tilting Trains
  • Second MoU
    The second MoU was signed between Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. The MoU aims to help the Konkan Railway in establishing the George Fernandes Institute of Tunnel Technology (GFITT) at Goa, especially for assimilation and dissemination of knowledge in the field of tunneling

13) SEBI bans Orion Capital, Orion Broking from Markets for 10 years

  • Markets regulator SEBI barred Orion Capital as well as Orion Broking and their partners from the securities markets for 10 years for failing to redress several investor grievances pertaining to non- settlement of funds due to the clients.
  • The nature of investor complaints received against both the firms are predominantly on non-settlement of the funds and securities and balances due to their clients. The claim amount is more than Rs 6 crore against Orion Capital and over Rs 4 crore against Orion Broking.

14) Arunachal Pradesh and J&K are Fastest Growing Economies

  • Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh were the fastest expanding State economies in 2015-16, according to a new series of gross State domestic product data with 2011-12 as the base year published by the Central Statistics Office.
  • The two States also reported the fastest rise in per capita income in the same year. Arunachal Pradesh’s gross State domestic product (GSDP) expanded 16.5 per cent and that of Jammu and Kashmir 14.7 per cent at constant 2011-12 prices.

1) PM Modi to Attend 9th BRICS Summit in China

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 9th BRICS Summit, Xiamen in China’s Fujian province during 3rd to 5th of September. Subsequently, the Prime Minister will pay a State visit to Myanmar from September 5th to 7th.
  • This will be Prime Minister Modi’s first bilateral State visit to Myanmar.
  • BRICS countries include- Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

2) Government approves first phase of Army reforms

  • On 30th august ,2017, The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved implementation of the first phase of recommendations of Shekatkar Committee.
  • This committee was formed to recommend measures to enhance combat capability and rebalancing Defence Expenditure of the Armed Forces with an aim to increase “teeth to tail ratio”, It had given 99 recommendations to the government on December 2016, out of which the Ministry of Defence has decided to implement 65 suggestions in phased manner.

3) First Synergy Conference on Defence Pension

  • The Defence Accounts Department (DAD) organized its first Synergy Conference on Defence Pensions in New Delhi. The objective of the conference was to obtain feedback from the pensioners that would help the department to serve them better with constantly improving systems and procedures.
  • The panel formed to interact with the pensioners was headed by Addl. CGDA Shri Upendra Sah.

4) GST Collection for First Month at Rs 92,283 Crore

  • The goods and services tax, GST, launched on 1 July, has got off to a good start, with collections exceeding the revenue target for the first month. According to the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, taxes worth Rs 92,283 crore were collected in July from just 64.42 per cent of the total taxpayer base.
  • The finance minister added that even after the compensation cess is excluded, the target will still be surpassed when all taxpayers file returns.

5) Fourth Session of the India-Tanzania Joint Trade Committee

  • The Fourth Session of the India-Tanzania Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting was held in New Delhi. The Indian delegation was led by Minister for State for Commerce and Industry Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman and Tanzanian delegation was led by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Mr. Charles John Mwijage.
  • The capital of Tanzania is Dodoma. John Magufuli is the Present President of Tanzania.

6) Indian Hotels Company Appoints Puneet Chhatwal as MD and CEO

  • Tata group hospitality firm Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has appointed Duetsche Hospitality chief executive Puneet Chhatwal as its Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
  • He will take over from incumbent Rakesh Sarna, who is stepping down on 30 September. Before he joined IHCL, Sarna was the group president – Americas of Hyatt Hotels Corporation.

7)  R.K. Raghavan is New High Commissioner of India to Cyprus

  • According to the External Affairs Ministry, Former CBI Director R.K. Raghavan has been appointed High Commissioner to Cyprus. His specialization is cybersecurity.

8) ICEX Launches World’s First Diamond Futures Contracts

  • The Indian Commodity Exchange (ICEX) launched the world’s first diamond futures contracts to provide exporters with a hedging tool. India is a global diamond polishing hub where 14 out of every 15 rough diamonds in the world are polished.
  • Mr. Ashok Sinha is the Chairman of Public Interest Director of ICEX.

9) YouTube Changes its Logo for the First Time

  • Google-owned YouTube has refreshed its iconic logo and introduced some major design changes to its desktop and mobile apps.
  • Unlike minor tweaks, this is the biggest change the YouTube logo has received over the years. The logo ditches the red colour inside the “Tube” part of the name and places the now familiar play icon to the left side of the YouTube name.
  • Susan D. Wojcicki is the CEO of YouTube.

10) Freyr Energy Ties up With Axis Bank

  • Solar energy services company Freyr Energy has tied up with Axis Bank to offer term loans ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh for tenures up to five years, for solar rooftop installations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
  • The loans will be given to MSMEs and self-employed individuals to install Freyr rooftop solar plants for industrial and commercial purposes. Over the past three years, Freyr has installed over 800 solar systems across 14 States in India and Ghana.

11) PV Sindhu, First Brand Ambassador for Bridgestone India

  • Badminton ace PV Sindhu, who recently won Silver at the World Championship, was appointed the first brand ambassador of tyre maker Bridgestone India.
  • The shuttler has signed a three year deal with Bridgestone India, a subsidiary of Bridgestone which is one of the sponsors for the Olympics 2020 in Japan. The Padma Shri recipient became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal in the Olympic Games Rio 2016.

12) NTPC signs Rs. 3,000-cr term loan agreement with ICICI Bank

  • NTPC has signed a term loan agreement for Rs 3,000 crore with ICICI Bank for partially funding its capital expenditure signed on 29th Aug 2017.

13) Small Industry Day

  • On 30th august every year small industry day is celebrated by ministry of Micro, Small &Medium Enterprises(MSME).
  • The trend of celebrating “SSI (Small Scale Industry) day” started in 2001. Celebrating ‘Industries Day’ will help districts to exhibit their growth potential and opportunities.
